How to Play Sky Words - Complete Beginner's Guide

Sky Words is a word puzzle game that combines a letter wheel with a crossword-style grid. Each level presents you with a set of letters arranged in a circle and a partially-hidden crossword board above. Your goal is to find all the words that fill the board by swiping across the letters in the correct order.

Understanding the Letter Wheel

At the bottom of every level, you will see a circular arrangement of letters. These are the building blocks for every word you need to find. The wheel typically contains between 3 and 7 letters, depending on the difficulty of the level. Early levels in the first world might give you just three or four letters, while later worlds frequently present six or seven.

To form a word, press and hold on the first letter, then drag your finger across the remaining letters without lifting. A line will follow your path, connecting each letter in sequence. When you release, the game checks whether your combination is a valid word for that level. If it is, the word appears on the crossword grid above.

The Crossword Grid

The grid sits at the top of the screen. It works like a traditional crossword in that words intersect horizontally and vertically, sharing common letters. When you successfully find a word, its letters light up on the grid, revealing part of the puzzle. Crossing letters are especially helpful because solving one word can reveal key letters for words that intersect it.

Some cells on the board start blank and only fill in as you discover words. Watching where new letters appear gives you strong hints about remaining words. If a vertical word gains a middle letter from a horizontal solution, you can often figure out the rest by checking which unused letters on the wheel could form a word through that position.

Swiping Mechanics and Controls

Swiping needs to be continuous. If you lift your finger mid-swipe, the attempt resets. You can swipe in any direction, including backwards through the circle, and you can revisit the same letter if it appears more than once. However, in most levels each letter appears only once on the wheel, so each letter can only be used once per word.

If you swipe a valid word that is not part of the current puzzle, it may count as a bonus word. Bonus words earn you coins but do not fill any cells on the grid. They are legitimate English words formed from the available letters that simply are not required to complete the level.

Completing a Level

A level is complete when every required word has been found and the entire crossword grid is filled. When this happens, the game awards you coins based on your performance. You then advance to the next level automatically. There is no time limit, so you can take as long as you need without penalty.

Worlds and Progression

Sky Words organizes its levels into themed worlds. Each world contains a set of levels, typically 80 per world, and the worlds are named after countries or regions. You progress through them sequentially: completing all levels in one world unlocks the next. There are currently 26 worlds plus additional levels beyond the main world sequence, totaling over 2,160 levels.

As you move through the worlds, the puzzles gradually increase in difficulty. Early worlds like France and Italy feature shorter words and simpler grids. By the time you reach later worlds like Japan or Turkey, you will face longer words, more complex grid layouts, and larger letter wheels.

Tips for New Players

Start each level by looking for the longest possible word. Longer words fill more cells on the grid, revealing crossing letters that make shorter words easier to spot. If you get stuck, try three-letter combinations first since short words are easy to overlook. Pay attention to common prefixes and suffixes like -ing, -ed, or un-. Finally, remember that you can always come back to a level later with fresh eyes.
